Truck Parking in the U.S.: Is It Really That Bad?

Truck drivers from all states have repeatedly stated the problem of insufficient parking for their vehicles. Certainly there are parking lots, and plenty of them. But many of them are either unsafe or inaccessible.

For several years, Jason’s Law, with funding from the government, has been studying the parking situation. In 2020, the study came to an end. The company’s report stated that:Truck Parking in the U.S.: Is It Really That Bad?

  1. Three-quarters of truck drivers can’t find a proper place to park, so they can’t get a proper rest. This happens not only at night, but also at other times of the day.
  2. More than 90% of truck drivers can’t find a proper parking spot after 7 p.m.
  3. There are parking spaces for only 3.5 million truck drivers in America.
  4. Outsiders in the number of parking spaces are Maine, Ohio and Illinois.
  5. More than half of truck drivers believe between 1 and 100 more parking spaces are needed to solve the problem. But only a few of them suggested specific ways out of the situation.

Experts estimate that the average truck driver gives about 10 percent of his annual salary to find a parking space. In addition to the material costs, there are time costs. As a result, drivers justifiably resent the reduction in income and the increase in work hours.

How Is the Problem Solved?

The problem is being addressed at both the state and private levels. According to the indicators above, it is clear that it is very serious, so it will take a lot of time.

Efforts on the Part of the Authorities

Some states, like Wyoming and Iowa, already have additional signs. You can use them to identify available parking spaces. These signs are placed along the roads that pass through these states.

There are also states (Arkansas among them) where truck parking spaces are being made from truck inspection areas.

In addition, there is something to be said about the FHWA. This organization is investing under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. The money is allocated to companies whose activities are related to road infrastructure upgrades.

Efforts on the Part of the BusinessTruck Parking in the U.S.: Is It Really That Bad?

Major travel centers such as Pilot Flying J, Love’s Travel Stops and TravelCenters of America (TA) added more than 12,000 parking spaces in the United States in the previous two years.

Just as importantly, business owners are working to improve existing parking spaces. The goal is to provide the highest level of safety and comfort for truck drivers. Under these programs, parking spaces are being expanded, making them more private, new video surveillance systems are being purchased, fencing is being added, etc.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that the problem is not being solved as quickly as we would like, today there are already first results. Experts have no doubt that the situation will improve even more in 2022.
