Company Registration
When registering a company, there are a number of steps required by the General Corporation Code, including:
- Selecting a business name and conducting a business name check
- Determining the type of business according to your business model and structure – the most common are sole proprietorship, general partnership, limited partnership, corporation and limited liability company.
- Filing a certificate of incorporation
- Determining the registration agent, drafting corporate bylaws, appointing directors and holding the first meeting of the board of directors.

Trailer ownership and trailer registration
Whether you buy them for your business or rent them, every trailer must be registered with the state of Delaware. Only then will the state allow them to travel on the roads.
How to get a title for a trailer
The process of titling a trailer usually begins at the DMV – but you can fill out forms online to save time. If you purchased or leased a trailer, the previous owner/seller or lessor must have executed a title transfer in your name. This is evidence that you are the owner of the trailer. If you purchased a new trailer from a manufacturer or dealer, however, you will need to fill out a title application.
Trailer Registration
To register your trailer, all you have to do is provide the DMV with proof of ownership (title or bill of sale for the trailer) and fill out an application for registration. In doing so, you will have to prove that you have paid all applicable taxes and taken out proper insurance for your trailer.
How much does it cost to title and register a trailer
If there is no lien on your trailer, the cost of titling is $55. The annual cost to register trailers – depending on weight – will be $15 for up to 1,000 pounds; $20 for 1,001 to 2,000 pounds; $40 for 2,001 to 5,000 pounds; and for trailers weighing more than 5,000 pounds, an additional $18 for every 1,000 pounds.
Keep in mind that if you are shipping through different states, you will need to obtain a “distribution registration.” You get this registration in your state so that you can then move through other jurisdictions without having to obtain multiple permits or registrations. You pay fees wherever you operate in proportion to the number of miles you travel in each state.
Tax on the use of heavy road vehicles
In addition to regular business taxes, you, as a carrier, are required to file an annual heavy vehicle operating tax return with the IRS. This tax applies to operations involving vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or more on public roads.
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, or HVUT, is an annual federal tax paid to the IRS for the use of heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or more on public roads.
The taxable gross vehicle weight is calculated as follows:
- the unladen weight of the fully loaded vehicle;
- the weight of the fully loaded trailer or semi-trailer;
- the maximum weight of the cargo carried on the vehicle and trailer or semi-trailer.
How to check a driver’s driving record
